The Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways, in coordination with the Village of Burnham, is currently in Phase II Contract Plan Preparation and Land Acquisition for the proposed grade-separated pedestrian and bicyclist bridge over multiple railroad tracks and Brainard Avenue.The project will provide access to the Hegewisch Station, the planned Burnham Greenway Trail in the City of Chicago, and the planned Burnham Greenway Trail in the Village of Burnham. The purpose of the project is to provide a safe connection for pedestrians and bicyclists by providing a bridge above the rail tracks and Brainard Avenue, increasing multimodal connections to transit, and improving community mobility and recreational options.

In 2019, the Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways completed a feasibility study to determine viable options for the proposed bridge. In 2023, the Phase I Preliminary Engineering and Environmental Study was completed. This Phase II Study builds upon the results of the Phase I engineering and environmental study and advances the project into a construction ready phase through preparation and land acquisition.
