Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways
Burnham Multimodal Connector
Preliminary Engineering and Environmental (Phase I) Study
Study Overview
The Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways, in coordination with the Village of Burnham, is leading a Phase I Study to evaluate the existing conditions and design of a grade-separated pedestrian and bicyclist bridge over multiple railroad tracks and Brainard Avenue. The project will provide access to the Hegewisch Station, the planned Burnham Greenway Trail in the City of Chicago, and the planned Burnham Greenway Trail in the Village of Burnham. The purpose of the project is to provide a safe connection for pedestrians and bicyclists by providing a bridge above the rail tracks and Brainard Avenue, increasing multimodal connections to transit, and improving community mobility and recreational options.
In 2019, the Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways completed a feasibility study to determine viable options for the proposed bridge. This Phase I Study builds upon the results of the feasibility study based on input from stakeholders and engineering and environmental studies.
